Shelby Street dialysis center opens in Columbus

February 13, 2014  | DaVita in the News
A new DaVita kidney dialysis center has made its debut on Shelby Street in south Columbus, with another drawing closer to opening off Riverchase Drive in Phenix City.

“We built that facility with the intent that it was convenient for patients, because there were no facilities on the south side of town. They had to go to the north side of town to get dialysis,” Vickie Taylor, group facility administrator, said of the 2401 Shelby St. facility that received its state certification in January.

Taylor oversees the DaVita dialysis centers in Columbus and Phenix City, as well as those in the nearby Georgia communities of Buena Vista, Americus and Montezuma. She said the new center at 4391 Riverchase Drive in Phenix City, next to Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital, should open within a couple of months. The clinic itself is ready, she said, but state surveyors in Alabama have yet to finish work that will allow it to open.

The Phenix City facility is a relocation project, with the the existing 1900 Opelika Road center and its 16 staffers now awaiting their move to the new home.DaVita also operates dialysis centers on Bradley Park Drive, Brookstone Centre Parkway and Stark Avenue in Columbus. Taylor said there are no changes with those, while there is room for growth in the medical specialty locally.“One in 10 Americans suffers from some form of chronic kidney disease, and they wind up, if not treated, on dialysis,” she said.

Denver-based DaVita HeathCare Partners operates kidney dialysis centers across the United States. It has more than 2,000 such facilities nationwide.Nashville, Tenn.-based Oman-Gibson Associates was the general contractor for the local projects, which also included a center at 4130 White House Parkway in nearby Warm Springs, Ga.Project manager Charles Watkins said his company currently has no other work in the area. The construction price tag for the 6,138-square-foot center on Shelby Street was $1.8 million, while the 9,165-square-foot facility on Riverchase Drive cost just over $2 million. The 6,379-square-foot structure in Warm Springs was $1.7 million. The Shelby Street location, which has six full-time staffers, plans an open house at 11 a.m. March 13, with Columbus Mayor Teresa Tomlinson expected to attend, Taylor said.
