Position Description

GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" />

This position reviews, processes, and follows up on patient financial assistance grant requests to non-profit charities; the American Kidney Fund (AKF), and The Kidney TRUST. This position responds to telephone calls and emails regarding the request process, requirements, and status of existing patient grant applications.  


The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all inclusive.

  • Evaluate eligibility of financial assistance requests; research and assist Social Workers with problematic requests
    • Communicates status and outcome to Social Worker 
  • Record requests in database for tracking; ensure timely processing for prompt turnaround time of urgent requests to ensure financial assistance needs are submitted for patient insurance continuation
  • Generate grant requests in AKF’s and/or The Kidney TRUST web-based system; ensure accuracy to avoid returned requests
    • Research returned requests and/or premium checks; correct and/or obtain needed information for reprocessing
  • Contact health insurance companies to verify premium payment and premium rates
  • Respond to telephone calls and emails regarding request process, requirements, and status of applications
  • Review, update and submit department reports; follow up on unpaid premium requests, missing premium requests, and missing HIPAA authorization forms 
  • File and purge records as needed
  • Maintain confidentiality of all company and patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations and DaVita policies
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned including but not limited to:

o   Work overtime with little or no notice as needed

o   Attend team meetings, phone conferences, and training as needed

o   Know, understand, and follow teammate guidelines, employment policies, and department or company procedures

  • Consistent, regular, punctual attendance as scheduled is an essential responsibility of this position

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <?xml:namespace prefix = "o" />

Education, licenses, certifications, and experience required to fulfill the essential duties, include computer skills as required.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s degree preferred
  • Minimum of one (1) year’s general office experience required; healthcare experience preferred

o   Demonstrated customer service experience required

o   Basic understanding of health insurance and insurance verification experience preferred

o   Basic accounts payable experience preferred

  • Intermediate computer skills and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access required

Physical requirements can vary. These must be reviewed with management. However, in general, the position requires the following physical activities:

·         Ability to lift minimum of 2 pounds to a maximum of 15 pounds unassisted; able to sit for extended periods of time with some standing, stooping, walking, stretching, reaching, lifting; moderate range of body motions

·         Ability to hear and interact by phone clearly and efficiently

·         Ability to use computer and all peripherals for extended periods of time




Level III - Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic)

No required tasks involve greater exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues than would be encountered by a visitor. The normal work routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluids or other hazardous conditions.
