Home Dialysis

Some dialysis patients don't get hemodialysis in a center but perform peritoneal dialysis (PD) or hemodialysis at home. These patients also rely on nephrology nurses to plan, coordinate and oversee their care. Many of the responsibilities of the PD and home hemodialysis (HHD) nurse are the same as in-center hemodialysis nurse, but there are some differences.

PD and HHD nurses have excellent teaching skills. They teach their patients how to perform their own treatments at home and give them the knowledge to know what to do if any complications occur during their treatment.

In-Center Hemodialysis

A hemodialysis nurse is responsible for assessing the needs of each patient and providing appropriate care to meet those needs.

From monitoring each patient’s vital signs and response to treatment—to providing post-dialysis care and everything in between, the dialysis nurse plays a crucial role in managing the complex and multifaceted care of patients with kidney disease.

Hospital Services Group

When dialysis patients are admitted to the hospital, DaVita Hospital Services Group (HSG) Registered Nurses, are there to provide their dialysis treatments that they need. Being a registered nurse in the hospital setting is different—DaVita HSG registered nurses work autonomously but are interconnected, supported and work together as a team.

DaVita Integrated Kidney Care (IKC)

DaVita IKC works as an extension of our in-center care teams, working together in active collaboration to provide holistic patient care. This includes supporting patients through the kidney disease process, as well as comorbid condition management such as diabetes, cardiac disease, hypertension and mental health and well-being assistance.
Opportunities include:
  • Provide dialysis care in various settings, including skilled nursing facilities
  • Work as part of a dedicated care team delivering hemodialysis on-site
  • Ensure patients receive the same high-quality care

Skilled Nursing Facility

Nephrology nurses work wherever patients require dialysis treatment—this can include a skilled nursing facility. We typically use a den model—hemodialysis is delivered by our dedicated care team at approximately six stations in a common room of the Skilled Nursing Facility. Patients receive the same high-quality therapy as they received in outpatient centers at their place of residence.

Other Opportunities

Our DaVita teammates help care for patients at every stage and setting along their kidney health journey—from slowing the progression of kidney disease to helping to support transplantation.

Your next opportunity may be a pediatric dialysis nurse or even a regional/divisional lead. It could even be in a leadership role as a clinical coordinator, clinical nurse manager or facility administrator.

"I loved being part of the Transition to Practice program. It supported me in my nursing journey by deepening my understanding of how to care for dialysis patients. The program also helped build my confidence in communicating with physicians, patients, and clinic staff, and gave me a clearer understanding of how each team member contributes to the dialysis care process."
